I was all ready to write about FINALLY seeing Spider-Man: No Way Home (COVID numbers spiked when it came out, so I didn’t feel comfortable seeing it with a crowd), but lo and behold! The teaser trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder decided to come out and completely derail my planned blog post. So the Spider-Man trio will have to wait. My boy Thor is BACK, BABY!
So Thor is on a mission of self-discovery! He has decided to leave his superhero-ing behind, which, to be honest, is a little disappointing because that definitely indicates that he will not be spending much time with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Thor seems to find it unfulfilling and needs to find his own way, his own purpose, in this new Odin/Loki/Asgard-less universe. While I was hoping that we would get a fair amount of Asgardians of the Galaxy hijinks in this movie, it seems that they will be short-lived.
Which is fine. Again, I was hoping for more of the banter and fun dynamics that Thor had with them in Infinity War, but whatever amount they wind up giving us will probably be perfect. Don’t want to overstay the welcome, and I trust Taika. Anyway!
Thor is back in fighting shape and ready for something new! He’s out there kissing blue-haired pirate(?) lasses after kraken battles…
Meeting up with other gods…
And…meeting up with other gods.
Now THIS is what I’m here for. Yes, that’s Natalie Portman wielding a re-forged Mjolnir as Mighty Thor! We’ve known this was coming since comic-con 2019 when Taika handed her the hammer, but to see it finally on-screen is quite a thrill. And damn, she got JACKED. Look at those arms. Mighty Thor looks incredible.
Heck, everything in this trailer looks incredible. Stuff that is ripped right from the comics looks amazing and all this cosmic stuff has just outstanding visuals ever since the first Thor. I know people aren’t too fond of the first two Thors, but I enjoyed them and will defend the visuals to the death. Guardians of the Galaxy gave everyone permission to get a little weirder with things and Thor: Ragnarock took things to another level, but the Thor movies have always been visual candy and this one looks like it will be more than a match for those standards already set.
And I couldn’t help but notice that Gamora is not with the Guardians of the Galaxy in this teaser. But Nebula is and…is that…no…it couldn’t be.
They did it, they really did it. Yup, it looks like that’s Sean Gunn’s Kraglin rolling with the Guardians! He’s sporting Yondu’s mohawk that he was testing out at the end of Guardians Vol. 2 and seems to be a full-fledged member of the team now. I did not know that, and I think it’s pretty damn cool.
And I wonder what Valkyrie’s role will be in this film. We get a glimpse of New Asgard and it looks like it has turned into a tourist destination.
and Valkyrie is bored, trapped as the mayor(?) of her town overrun by cruise ship passengers.
So, before we get into potential spoilers, I just want to say that this movie looks awesome. I loved Thor: Ragnarock, Taika Waititi is on a roll, and I couldn’t be more pumped for this bad boy. It looks like it will be a ton of fun and I bet that we will get taken on an emotional journey that will leave us wrecks, but uplifted at the end of the day. Bring on Love & Thunder!
OK, time for *POTENTIAL SPOILERS*
So, we know that there will be other plot points that aren’t even really hinted at in the teaser. We know that Christian Bale is in the movie as a character named Gorr the God Butcher. We don’t get a glimpse of him in this teaser, but I bet we see at least one of his victims. I’m willing to bet good money that Zeus gets taken down by Gorr. Calling it, Zeus is not long for this realm!
There’s also the possibility that Mighty Thor or even Thor, himself, is killed by him in this film. Having Thor lose Jane/Mighty Thor would be kind of cruel, after all that he’s already lost, but it’s definitely a way that they could go.
I think it’s more likely that Thor dies and Mighty Thor takes his place helming the franchise. Would this be a mis-step? I dunno. I love Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, but having Natalie Portman lead a superhero franchise would be outstanding. And from what I understand, Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor comic storyline is excellent. It’s all speculative, but hey, it could definitely happen.
Again, no matter what, I’m thoroughly excited for this movie! The Thor world has gotten weird and fun and funny and action-packed and July 8th cannot come fast enough!
